Parkinson’s Disease

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system. PD is a progressive neurological disorder where the dopamine producing neurons are affected in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

Symptoms usually gradually develop over years. Progression of the disease is very different amongst each individual and at Complete Neuro Rehab we set personalised plans of treatment to allow you to manage your symptoms.

People with PD may experience the following movement related symptoms:

·     Reduced balance

·     Problems with walking (gait problems)

·     Postural changes and instability

·     Limb stiffness (rigidity)

·     Slowness if movement (bradykinesia)

·     Tremor in the arm and hand or pill rolling tremor in hands

There can be other, non-movement related symptoms such as:

·     Cognitive impairments

·     Mental health disorders

·     Dementia

·     Sleep disorders

·     Sensory disturbances

How can we help people with Parkinson’s Disease at Complete Neuro Rehab?

At Complete Neuro Rehab our Physiotherapists focus on meaningful goal setting with our clients. We conduct a thorough neurological assessment where we assess your posture, balance and walking or transfers. Following this assessment an example of intervention might be:

·     TYMO balance training  - using a wobble board and neuro gaming to challenge and stimulate your balance in a fun interactive way

·     OMEGO – pre-gait training to demonstrate and encourage smoothness of movement

·     Functional electrical stimulation to encourage fluidity and prompting (cueing strategies) to help with walking and movement

·     AlterG anti-gravity treadmill training – awonderful, safe environment to allow you to challenge your walking pace

·     Postural training and strength – with Pilates physiotherapy to enhance your muscular control of movement and posture.
